The People Who Keep Northern Virginia's Buildings Running After Hours

When the last tenant badges out of a Tysons office tower, a second shift begins. Vacuums start on the upper floors. A porter checks the lobby glass one more time. Someone notices that the restroom on six has a slow drip that was not there yesterday. By 7 a.m., the building looks the way tenants expect it to look, and almost nobody knows who made that happen.

Friday, October 2 is Custodial Workers Recognition Day. It is an informal observance rather than an official one, but it is a good excuse to do something the industry rarely does: put names and faces to the work. This week we are introducing three members of the OCC Clean team who help care for the more than 3 million square feet of commercial space we maintain across Northern Virginia.

A big workforce that works out of sight

Janitors and building cleaners held about 2.4 million jobs in the United States in 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which projects roughly 321,800 openings in the occupation every year through 2035. The BLS also notes that many cleaners work evening hours, because offices are easiest to clean once they are empty.

That schedule is exactly why the work goes unseen. Property managers see the results in the morning walk. Tenants see a clean conference room. What they rarely see is the judgment involved: which spill needs a different product, which door closer is failing, which entry mat is about to curl and become a trip hazard.

Why tenure matters to your building

Every property manager knows the cost of a crew that turns over constantly. New people do not know which suite has a sensitive alarm, which tenant wants the blinds left alone or which stairwell door sticks. Quality slips, and the manager ends up doing the walkthroughs the vendor should have done.

Long-tenured crew members bring something a checklist cannot: memory of the building. They know what normal looks like, so they notice when something is off. That is why the angle for this week is not just "thank you." It is a reminder that the people cleaning your building are one of your best sources of information about it.

Making the invisible work visible

The challenge is that good night work leaves no trace except the result. Our Quality Assurance Program is designed to close that gap, and it comes at no extra cost:

  • Digital inspections with photo reporting. Supervisors document what they inspect, so you can see the condition of your spaces without walking every floor yourself.

  • QR code feedback. Tenants can scan a code to report an issue or a job well done. Crews see that feedback, which means the compliments reach the people who earned them.

  • Monthly supervisor reviews. A regular look at trends, open items and anything the crew flagged, such as the dripping faucet or the curling mat.

When the crew's observations are recorded and shared, their work stops being invisible. It becomes data you can use to plan maintenance, answer tenant questions and justify your budget.

Three ways to recognize your cleaning team this week

You do not need a big event to mark October 2. A few simple ideas for property and facility managers:

  1. Say thank you in person. Stay a little late one evening or ask your provider to introduce you to the crew lead. A short conversation goes a long way.

  2. Share the tenant compliments. Forward positive tenant emails or QR feedback to your cleaning provider and ask that they reach the crew.

  3. Ask the crew what they see. Invite your night supervisor to share recurring issues. You may learn about a maintenance problem before it becomes an expensive one.

See the team at work in your building

OCC Clean has served Northern Virginia since 2000, and our crews are the reason clients trust us with janitorial, day porter, floor care, building engineering and 24/7 water damage response under one contract. If you would like to meet the people who would care for your property, request a walkthrough and we will bring a supervisor to your building to talk through your needs.
